Jean de Florette (1986) – Filming Locations
Drama · Directed by Claude Berri · Starring Yves Montand, Elisabeth Depardieu
In a rural French village, an old man and his only remaining relative cast their covetous eyes on an adjoining vacant property. They need its spring water for growing their flowers, and are dismayed to hear that the man who has inherited it is moving in. They block up the spring and watch as their new neighbour tries to keep his crops watered from wells far afield through the hot summer. Though they see his desperate efforts are breaking his health and his wife and daughter's hearts, they think only of getting the water.
Where was Jean de Florette filmed?
- Provence, France, Provence – Jean de Florette discovers and attempts to restore his inherited spring-fed property in the countryside. The quarry and hillside locations in the Cévennes region provided the authentic rural landscape for the protagonist's farm and the crucial spring-water plot element
- Anduze, France, Anduze – Village scenes and Jean's interactions with local townspeople and merchants. The picturesque Cévenole village served as the authentic Provençal community where Jean attempts to integrate and where the villagers' attitudes toward him are established
- Alès, France, Alès – Rural landscapes and outdoor sequences establishing the agricultural setting. The Gard region around Alès provided additional authentic Provençal countryside locations for farming and village life scenes
