After spending years in California, Amir returns to his homeland in Afghanistan to help his old friend Hassan, whose son is in trouble.
Where was The Kite Runner filmed?
- Kashgar, China, Kashgar – The streets and bazaars of Kashgar stand in for 1970s Kabul, where young Amir and Hassan fly kites and navigate their childhood world. Because filming in Afghanistan was impossible due to security concerns, the production chose Kashgar's ancient Silk Road old city, whose mud-brick architecture and Central Asian streetscapes closely resembled pre-war Kabul
- Kashgar, China, Kashgar – The narrow alleyways where Hassan is cornered and assaulted by Assef and his gang, the film's pivotal traumatic event. The labyrinthine mud-walled lanes of old Kashgar provided an authentic-looking stand-in for the Kabul back streets where the story's central act of betrayal occurs
- Kashgar, China, Kashgar – Amir and Hassan participate in the winter kite-fighting tournament, with Amir cutting down the last kite. The flat-roofed vernacular architecture of Kashgar's old neighbourhoods provided the sweeping rooftop vistas essential to the film's celebrated kite-running sequences
- San Francisco, United States, San Francisco – Adult Amir lives as an Afghan-American writer in the Bay Area; scenes of his domestic life and his father Baba's struggles adapting to America. The San Francisco Bay Area, home to one of the largest Afghan diaspora communities in the United States, was used to authentically portray the Afghan immigrant experience central to the second act
- Chengdu, China, Chengdu – Scenes depicting Amir's journey back toward Afghanistan through Pakistan, including his meeting with Rahim Khan. Parts of the production relocated to Chengdu for additional scenes requiring South or Central Asian visual character, supplementing the primary Kashgar shoot
- Beijing, China, Beijing – Various interior and supplementary scenes shot at studio facilities during principal photography. The production used Beijing-based studio infrastructure to support the China-based shoot, handling interior sets and production logistics for the film
