Where was The Bridge on the River Kwai filmed?
- Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Colombo – POW camp construction of the bridge over the river, primary filming location for the bridge sequences. David Lean chose the Kelani River near Peradeniya to construct a full-scale replica of the bridge, providing authentic river conditions and tropical landscape for the entire central narrative
- Colombo, Sri Lanka, Colombo – British military command sequences and Colonel Nicholson's interactions with Japanese officers. Urban exterior sequences establishing the colonial military presence and command structure during the Japanese occupation
- Thailand, Kanchanaburi Province – Real historical site of the Death Railway and bridge construction during World War II. While the main production was filmed in Ceylon, Lean visited the actual Thai location of the historical bridge to inform the production design and authenticate the story
